Matthew Bergen / Founder
Matthew Bergen started his career with the Secret Service. Assigned to the NY Field Office, he participated in protective missions for the President of the United States and foreign dignitaries attending the United Nations.
Matthew also assisted in running range qualifications for local and satellite offices, with the duty pistol, shotgun, and sub-gun.
In 2004, Matthew left the Secret Service and is now in his 18th year as a current Active Duty Law Enforcement Officer in NJ and has been responsible for the training the 900+ sworn members.
Currently Matthew holds Instructor Level Certifications for Firearms, Patrol Rifle Instructor, Force on Force Instructor, Active Shooter Response Instructor, Bleeding Control Instructor, Stop the Bleed Instructor and a CPTED Practitioner.
Matthew has been a shooting enthusiast since a young age and has invested his own time and money into attending shooting schools offered by some of the industry’s top names and companies.
Jim Thompson / Founder
Founder of Black River Defensive Solutions, Jim Thompson recently retired after completing 25 years with the NJ State Police. He has served in uniform for his entire career and lead several elite units in the North Jersey area. During his career, Jim has served as Firearms Instructor for the issued handgun and shotgun, as well as a Patrol Rifle Instructor. He was also a Crisis Negotiator within his agency.
